**A Simple Reset**
We are carrying nearly $40 trillion in federal debt. Interest is already eating real growth. That path ends in a reckoning. The only question is whether we use the reckoning to rebuild something functional or simply repeat the same structure at a higher level of pain.
The core problem is not schools, or culture-war language, or even tax rates in isolation. It is that the economic and institutional system has made the single-earner household the exception instead of the norm. For most of history one parent worked and the other raised the children. That pattern produced the next generation without requiring industrial-scale daycare or an ever-expanding school apparatus to replace the family. We inverted it. Two incomes became necessary, family time collapsed, and institutions moved in to fill the gap. The tax system and the cost structure rewarded the inversion and then locked it in.
**What has to change**
1. **Family economics first**
Structure wages, taxes, housing, and basic costs so that a single earner can again support a household. This is the prerequisite. Everything else is secondary.
2. **Tax simplification**
Move toward a broad, low-rate consumption or flat tax in the spirit of the old FairTax / flat-tax proposals. Reduce the tax code’s ability to social-engineer behavior. Less complexity, fewer preferences, less political leverage over private life.
3. **Education begins with children, not bureaucracies**
- Stabilize language early. One durable national dictionary standard, maintained publicly, so meaning does not become a political weapon.
- Classroom teaching of ordinary students should preferentially be done by people who have raised children. Those without children can still teach remotely or in special education.
- Study the systems that actually produce competent young people (Japan and others), run disciplined pilots, and keep only what works.
- The long-term aim is not to perfect the current batch-processing model but to make it less necessary as families recover the capacity to form their own children.
4. **Method**
Incremental reform inside the existing institutions has failed for decades. Real change requires a clear break — a shock that forces new rules rather than endless negotiation inside the old ones.
**The dream worth tasting**
A country in which a normal family can live on one income, children are formed first at home, schools support rather than replace parents, language is stable, and the state no longer needs to extract ever-larger shares of private life to service its own debt and ambitions.
That is the direction. The arithmetic of the debt will force a decision in any case. Better to decide toward competence and family than toward more of the same.
