d1 renovates Bakersfield

Dear Editor,The Feb. 25 edition's coverage of the new Kern County committee on stray/feral cats shows compassion can win: humane TNR (trap, neuter, vaccinate, classify, treat, manage) instead of bans. We should apply the exact same structured, dignified approach to our unhoused neighbors.First, square away the cats with mobile patrols. Then, pass a targeted vagrancy ordinance prohibiting prolonged encampments — but pair it with real alternatives: assessment (health/needs), clean-up (hygiene/medical), treatment (vaccines/addiction support), and the choice to self-build fireproof hempcrete homes in green bamboo corridors along waterways (atmospheric water capturers for independence). Or simply leave for other support. This empowers graduates from Kern's recovery, job training, veteran, and youth programs to start here — building/maintaining clusters, harvesting bamboo, managing cat colonies, gaining real skills and responsibility. It fosters the next generation of leadership right in our community.Carlos at the Mission would be the top guy to put in charge — fair, experienced, trusted — as arbiter to oversee operations and guide participants.Let's turn headlines into solutions that green Bakersfield, reduce street presence, and build leaders from within.Sincerely,
